Before we enjoy a plateful of turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing this Thanksgiving, our family will use these place cards to kick off our Thanksgiving celebration.

My sister-in-law introduced us to the idea a couple years ago and I love the simple, practical way it reinforces thankfulness—for God’s love, his forgiveness, a warm home on a cold day, a meal to share with friends, and the list goes on.

You’ll use the place cards to spell a word related to thankfulness. See below for a list of words based on the number of guests you have.

Here’s all you’ll need: colored card stock, harvest stickers (I used felt or wood stickers), scissors, and a marker. Of course, if you’re crafty you can fancy things up. Me? I keep things simple.

Cut an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet in half.

Fold each half to create a place card.

Add your decoration sticker in one corner and the first letter of the thankfulness word you’ll spell in the other corner (e.g. “T” for Thanksgiving).

Add the name of one of your family members or guests.

On the inside of each place card, write (or print out) a different Scripture verse that relates to thankfulness (see a list for verse suggestions below).

Depending on how many people you have for dinner, you can spell these words…
Thanks (6 people)
Thanks! (7 people)
Thankful (8 people)
Gratitude (9 people)
Thanksgiving (12 people)
Thanksgiving Day (15 people)
You get the idea!

Scripture verses you can use
Psalm 107:15
Psalm 111:1
Psalm 136:26
Psalm 145:10
Psalm 145:17

For more verses, go to biblegateway.com and search for “thank.”

Before dinner, take turns reading your verses in the order of the letters that spell your Thanksgiving word. Wrap up with a time of one-sentence thanksgiving prayers from everyone around the table.

Blessings on your family this Thanksgiving!
